UPDATES AND ADDITIONS: NOVEMBER 2004

I’ve recently come upon some new sources that fit in this chapter’s discussion of checking selected prescreened business oriented sites before using a search engine:

Databases

SMEALSearch, http://smealsearch1.psu.edu/

A unique academic-oriented business document and citation search system with precision search features. SMEALSearch indexes academic business-oriented journals and research such as university and research institute papers and articles.

Invisible Web Locators

DocuTicker, http://www.resourceshelf.com/docuticker

A spin-off of Gary Price’s outstanding ResourceShelf.com, DocuTicker identifies and provides links to reports, documents, lists and other full-text sources of interest to serious researchers.

Web Indexes and Directories

OAISTER, http://oaister.umdl.umich.edu/o/oaister/

I no longer recommend Business.com as a directory to substantive sites on the Web. Instead, I have come across this site, OAISTER, which, while not strictly business focused, is far superior for locating substantive research-oriented sites on the Web. OAISTER is an outstanding directory of substantive academic collections, resources, and digital libraries, with lots of precision and advanced search features. OAISTER is produced by the University of Michigan’s Digital Library Production Service.

Weblogs

Library Stuff, http://www.librarystuff.net

Librarian Steven Cohen offers his excellent advice on news on the net, particularly as it pertains to librarians and researchers.

RSS Feeds

Recently I’ve come across a few superior RSS readers. I’d advise looking into Bloglines, Kinja, and SharpReader, and using them instead of the AmphetaDesk and NewsMonster products listed in the book as examples of leading readers:

Kinja, http://www.kinja.com
